In this scenario, Guy has returned to the group with his new character, whom he hasn't finished making
GM: Oh hey Guy, wasn't sure you'd be joining us this week. You got your new character?
Guy (Cletus): Mostly, just a few things I need to finish up
GM: Like
Guy (Cletus): Well skills
GM: Oh ok..
Guy (Cletus): Also inventory
GM: Did you want to use an equipment pack .. or?
Guy (Cletus): Also the class pie pieces
GM: W...
Guy (Cletus): And any traits or morality of course
GM: What do you have?
Guy (Cletus): The name, rolled attributes, and general concept
GM: Ok, so he's mostly built then.
Guy (Cletus): Yep, I'll just fill in the rest as we go
Tom (Jack): Are we going to do group templates for him?
GM: No, we'll do that in another play example. Ok, so you left off staying at the Skull and Crossroads Tavern. You are on the run and spies or assassins could be lurking behind every shadow. What do you do?
Julia (Brother Cadmus): I stand up on a table and declare "What ho! One of our companions as passed on and we seek a replacement. Is anyone here in search of adventure?"
Guy (Cletus): I stand up and say "I will join you."
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Very well, you seem trustworthy. Please join our ranks.
Kim (Thaugo): This is the sort of deep and immersive story telling that keeps me coming back week after week.
Guy (Cletus): I am Cletus by the way
Tom (Jack): We didn't ask. Please lurk mysteriously in the rear ranks until such time as it is dramatically appropriate for you to step up and save the day.
Guy (Cletus): That seems a little on the nose, even given my entrance
Chuck (Abraham): I bet my MVP vote that you don't make it to the end of the session with this guy, so we really can't be wasting too much time on him. Lets head out.
The party leaves the tavern and begins adventuring through the Forest of Certain Gloom. It begins raining as nightfall approaches
GM: So does anyone have a tent?
Everyone turns to look at Guy.
Guy (Cletus): Ug... how many dots is a tent?
GM: 4 dots
Guy (Cletus): Screw that, I am not wasting 4 dots of starting inventory on a tent. What about a tarp to make a tent with?
GM: 2 dots
Guy sighs
Guy (Cletus): Oh what fortune. I have brought an oiled canvas tarp to make a tent with. Does anyone here have rope?
Everyone stares blankly at Guy.
Guy (Cletus): Seriously? No one has rope for their character. Fine. Silk rope is 1 dot right?
GM: Yes
Guy (Cletus): So I set up a makeshift tent
GM: Are you guys starting a fire? It will be pretty hard because its raining.
Guy (Cletus): We could set up a small fire under the tent.
GM: Its an oiled tarp that you haphazardly turned into a tent with a single length of rope and some local sticks to hold down the corners. How confident are you that you won't burn down your tent?
Guy (Cletus): I know how to make a tent
GM: Do you? Does Cletus have a skill or background in this?
Guy (Cletus): I guess I am spending starting skills then
Julia (Brother Cadmus): I have both Arson and Rough Sleeping. So I know how to make a makeshift tent and with Arson I know what not to do. I should be able to set this up so you don't have to spend the skills yet.
GM: I suppose, Guy?
Guy (Cletus): Ya, I may still spend skills to be able to do this type of stuff later, but lets move on.
The party camps for the night and does not encounter any opponents. They head out the next day where they encounter a mysterious grove with a tree covered in silver leaves and crystalline apples.
Tom (Jack): Is this related to our quest? I forgot the details.
Chuck (Abraham): Yes
Kim (Thaugo): How is this related to the Seals of Margossa?
Chuck (Abraham): Oh I thought you meant our main quest of getting rich
Guy (Cletus): Its obviously a trap though
Julia (Brother Cadmus): I don't know, not to metagame..
Kim (Thaugo): incoming metagaming
Julia (Brother Cadmus): But a noticeable chunk of the time these "too good to be true" things just are, to try to get us lulled into a false sense of safety.
Kim (Thaugo): So we should avoid it
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Hell no. Lull away, this probably has some great loot!
With that, the party wades into the obvious trap and is ambushed by crystalline harpies.
GM: Ok, so people draw their weapons as the harpies close in from above. What is Cletus armed with if anything?
Guy (Cletus): He is armed with the dreaded Kusarigama
GM: Ok, that is a pretty specialist weapon. To use it effectively you are going to have to have some sort of background with it.
Guy (Cletus): I shall spend 4 of my skill points on the background of "Carnival Weaponry Merchant"
GM: How many points do you start with?
Guy (Cletus): My Intelligence is 8. I have 4 Schrodinger's Skill Points left.
GM: The Kusarigama is 3 dots as a bastard weapon, how many inventory do you have?
Guy (Cletus): 11 Strength, and I spent 2 on the tarp and 1 on the silk rope already. I have 6 dots of Schrodinger's Inventory left.
Initiative is rolled and one of the harpies interrupts to attack Cletus.
GM: A 9, I doubt that is going to hit.
Guy (Cletus): Ok, I roll a d20 to defend
GM: You are becoming Reckless already? You were still calm so could just auto defend.
Guy (Cletus): This is the first conflict I've been in and I've decided Cletus is going to take the "Loose Cannon" trait.
GM: Ok, lets see your roll then
Guy rolls the die and gets a 5.
GM: That looks like a hit
Guy (Cletus): Well I have a +1 from my agility. So that is a 6. And I am part warrior
GM: You are?
Guy (Cletus): I am now, so that is another +1, and I will take 'Martial Artist' as a warrior power and spend one of my skill points on the 'Improvised Parry' combat trick, so I can parry with the weapon's chain for another +1 to get a 9 and block the attack.
GM: Ok, so you deflect the attack
Guy (Cletus): And, wouldn't you know it I have decided that 5 is my lucky number. So I'd like to spend another skill to know the trick "Riposte" and get a return attack.
GM: Normally I limit starting tricks to one, but you are under levelled so go for it.
The fight continues, two rounds later, disaster! As Cletus is struck for 10 damage
GM: So you are set to take some real injuries here as I am guessing you have 6 luck? Or are you taking Mary Sue and only have 4?
Kim (Thaugo): You could take another pie piece in warrior and take "Veteran" as a power so you could spend it two for one.
Guy (Cletus): I am going to be at least one part fool, so I will take Gambler, being a carny, and have at least 8 starting luck.
GM: If you go two parts fool you could also take Fop and/or Unlikely hero to bump you to 10 or 12 starting luck?
Guy (Cletus): I have a mullet and have given everyone free tickets to the gun show, so no way I would fit as either a Fop nor Unlikely Hero. You see these guns today and you better runaway.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Booo! Your jokes are bad and you should feel bad.
Guy (Cletus): No, I'll pay 8 and spend my starting fate one more luck.
Guy rolls a die and gets 1
GM: Looks like damage is heading your way then
Guy (Cletus): Nope, I WILL be two parts fool but I will take comic relief. I have 1 milestone I can re-roll that 1.
Guy rerolls the die and gets a 5.
Guy (Cletus): Much better
The fight continues and the party spends the night camping in the grove.
GM: You are sleeping under and oiled tarp and are going hungry, so I don't think anyone is regaining any luck tonight.
Guy (Cletus): I can't survive without my luck refilling, so I will use the last available spot for a Fool power on Optimist. My guy knows he kicks ass and will come out on top in the end. So his luck resets to full in the morning.
GM: Well its pretty much the end of the session, so you need to fill in your remainder. You have 2 skill points, your morality, and 5 inventory to use.
Guy (Cletus): My last two skills are going to be brawling and wagoneering.
GM: Not literacy?
Guy (Cletus): I aint no nerd
GM: Morality?
Guy (Cletus): Contrarian Hero
Tom (Jack): Chaotic Good?
Guy (Cletus): If you wanna call it that
GM: And equipment?
Guy (Cletus): Stetson, Black Velvet Cape, Two Shuriken, and a pouch of chewing tobacco.
GM: Perfect. Now no one is handling logistical concerns.
