Unending Tinkering

In this Scenario The Party has just finished an adventure where they rescued a princess from a tower. Then burned down the tower. Then slew the Princess due to a translation error.

GM: Well, as the smoldering rubble sinks into the swamp I figure this is a good time to wrap up, do XP and all that Jazz.
Tom (Jack): Don't worry, the first tower may have sunk into the swamp..
Chuck (Abraham): Nope, no more Monty Python, I have to catch the bus in 20 minutes.
Tom (Jack): Fine.. jeez
GM: So, XP. You killed the level 4 Guardian. He had 8000xp and you get 10% of that split 5 ways is 160 each. You also captured the level 3 Cultist, he had 4000xp and you get 25% of that split 5 ways is another 200 each. You get 360 from Vanquishing "Villains"
Kim (Thaugo): What about the Princess?
GM: She had no levels so she was a minion. Also you killed her, and dead minions are worth no XP.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): But her royal guards were left alive! They were merely dying, not dead! We didn't finish them off!
GM: They had comparable equipment, there were 2 of them left "alive", so that is 100xp split 5 ways, another 20 xp each. 380 total.
Guy (Sir Vancierge): I disagree about the princess
GM: How on earth can you think murdering a 0th level princess is worth XP?
Guy (Sir Vancierge): If you recall we killed the princess because we thought she was the Hag of Sorrow Swamp, who steals children each Halloween to absorb their youth and remain fair and young during the day, and reverting to a hag each night.
GM: But she wasn't, the Hag is just a myth
Guy (Sir Vancierge): Thaugo may know that, but the rest of us don't and more importantly the townsfolk in the nearby village don't. There was a haunted tower, there was a hag, and when we tell them we slew the hag as she pretended to be a princess they are just going to notice no children go missing on halloween. Why would a princess be in the swamp after all?
GM: You think you should get XP for killing her as a monster? Its still 0 given her abilities.
Guy (Sir Vancierge): She is a named monster, a powerless one sure.. but named monsters give the greater XP between power and reputation do they not? Her reputation puts her as a local legend. That is a 1000xp right?
GM: She should have d6 luck and a fate point then
Kim (Thaugo): Just because she didn't use them..
GM: You knew she wasn't a monster so you wouldn't get XP anyway
Kim (Thaugo): But I haven't actually told them yet..so they could get it split 4 ways right?
GM: Fuck it, its the holidays. Fine the rest of you get 250xp for killing the princess. I think that is it.
Chuck (Abraham): We also reached the center of the Swamp of Sorrow and disarmed that explosive trap.
GM: One, you are right about the swamp, it is uncommon for people to venture into the swamp and return so that is 150xp, it isn't split so you all get 150xp. But the trap went off and set the tower on fire.
Chuck (Abraham): And didn't harm any of us or anything we care about. Perfect bomb disposal technique.
GM: Fine, its deadly so that is 50xp. It also isn't split so you all get another 50xp.
Tom (Jack): What about the treasure?
GM: The guardian's wallet is not a famed treasure. No one will sing ballads about your heroic looting of a dead guy's random pocket change.
Tom (Jack): Worth a shot.
GM: So that is 535 for Thaugo and 785 for everyone else. So who are you voting for MVP, Tom, we'll start with you.
Tom (Jack): I totally was
GM: And you can't vote for yourself, try again
Tom (Jack): Abraham pulled set off the trap that distracted the guardian and let us kill the princess, so I will say him.
GM: One vote for Abraham, Chuck you're next.
Chuck (Abraham): I vote for Thaugo for keeping the princess bit secret
Kim (Thaugo): Woot.
GM: One vote for Abraham, one for Thaugo. Julia?
Julia (Brother Cadmus): I am going to vote Abraham, same reason.
GM: Two votes for Abraham, one for Thaugo. Guy?
Guy (Sir Vancierge): Thaugo for the extra XP in silence
GM: Two for Abraham, two for Thaugo, Kim?
Kim (Thaugo): I vote for Jack because of his funny banter
Chuck (Abraham): Which now makes it roll off between the two of us for MVP. Funny that.
GM: High to Chuck, low to Kim.

The GM rolls a d6 and rolls a 2.

GM: Kim is MVP, she gets 1 fate and +5 to her awesomeness. Lets start with her.
Chuck (Abraham): She needs it more anyway
GM: So what is your base awesomeness?
Kim (Thaugo): I have +1 for a manly beard.
Tom (Jack): I have the Comic Relief power so I give everyone a +1 bonus since I have one milestone.
Kim (Thaugo): Ok, so +2.
GM: +7 since you were MVP. Did you take any extra risk purely for style?
Kim (Thaugo): Even though I knew the Hag was pure bullshit I let Sir Vancierge think it wasn't and plot to kill the princess because she called Thaugo hideous.
GM: That could have easily gotten someone killed, so I'll give a +5 bonus to awesomeness. Anything else?
Kim (Thaugo): Not really, I had to struggle to stay alive this game so I didn't risk much.
GM: Ok, so roll for new fates. Roll a d20 and try to get either a natural 20 or equal to or less than your awesomeness. Despite us doing this every game, I feel the need to explain this fully.
Kim (Thaugo): Ok, I rolled a d20 and got an 9. This means I get 1 fate point and use up 9 of my 12 awesomeness. I have 3 left and will roll again, attempting to get either a natural 20 or 3 or less. I rolled a 6 so I get no additional fate points, merely the 1 for MVP and the 1 I got for rolling under my awesomeness.
GM: Ok, so now the 2d6. You are a rogue and mystic So you have two chances for a power up of your personal item. 7 for your rogue's lucky item, and a 6 on the left most die for your talisman. Did you complete a task related to each class?
Kim (Thaugo): We secretly broke into the cultist shrine and knocked out the cultist so that is a stealth mission. I defiled his rival demon shrine so that is a mystical encounter. I rolled the 2d6 and got a 3,4. This means my lucky item increases in benefit by 1.
GM: Ok, Tom you are up next.
Chuck (Abraham): Shit I got the schedule wrong, I have to run to catch the bus. Can we do this next game?
GM: Sure, just write down what you did so you don't forget
Guy (Sir Vancierge): I'll head out with you, this is my third beer and I probably shouldn't drive. It Ok to leave my car here?
GM: Sure, just leave your keys in case I need to move it.
Guy (Sir Vancierge): Happy New Years if I don't talk to you guys before then

Everyone else: Bye guys!
Tom (Jack): So I have +1 for a cape, +1 for an awesome hat, and +1 for my Comic Relief power. I have a base awesomeness of +3.
GM: And did you take any extra risk for style?
Tom (Jack): I rebuffed the princesses offer of marriage because we thought she was a Sea Hag even though I as a player knew she wasn't.
GM: Then why did you let them kill her?
Tom (Jack): Extra risk for style, I used up waaay too many fates.
GM: Ok, that was a potential notable loss as she was rich. +2 bonus.
Tom (Jack): I also helped set off the trap that took down the tower while several of us were in it because I greedily thought it must be hiding treasure.
GM: That likely could have killed you, so +10.
Tom (Jack): I also just rolled over went back to sleep I noticed Abraham had wandered off while keeping watch.
GM: Another +2
Tom (Jack): I think that is it.
GM: So you have a total of +17. Roll a d20 and try to get either a natural 20 or 18 or less. Tom (Jack): For fuck's sake GM: 19 eh? Tom (Jack): Fucking bullshit GM: You could spend a fate to reroll that Tom (Jack): I only have one left.. but what are the odds I'd get two 19's in a row? I'll probably at least gain it back. GM: Go for it Tom (Jack): oh boy, 16.
GM: So you use up 16 of your 17 awesomeness and gain a fate. You have 1 awesomeness left so you need either a 1 or a 20 on the d20 roll.
Tom (Jack): 4, so nothing.
GM: So now the 2d6. You are part bard, which will give you a henchman on a roll of 10 or more, and fool which requires a 1 on the rightmost die.
Tom (Jack): I convinced the princess to leave her tower while her guardian was distracted. So I completed a bard task. I also explored a new fabled location as evidenced by the XP it gave. I rolled a 3 and a 6 and so get nothing.
GM: You have one fate, you could reroll the 3. 50/50 chance you get a henchman?
Tom (Jack): Nope, need to save that to try to stay alive.
GM: Julia, Brother Cadmus is up next. What's the base awesomeness?
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Is the Iron Birdcage an awesome hat?
GM: It counts as a full helm, so its a useful piece of headgear. I'd say no , as I do every time.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): I have the +1 from Jack's Comic Relief power, +1 for a manly beard, +5 for having and needing an eye patch.
GM: You have an eye patch?
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Yes, we've covered this every game. My eye offended me so I plucked it out.
GM: Of course, I should remember this but feel compelled to pull apart mechanics in great detail right now.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): About how wearing an eyepatch gives +1 awesomeness or +5 if you actually need it?
GM: Exactly.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): So my base is +7
GM: Did you take any extra risk for style?
Julia (Brother Cadmus): I killed the Guardian even though he was already unconscious and would have given us more XP.
GM: But in doing so you remove him as a future threat, he couldn't escape captivity or challenge your story about the princess. There was a reason other than style to kill the Guardian.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Not really then, everything I did had tactically valid reasons behind it.
GM: So you have an awesomeness of 7, roll it.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Nat 20!
Tom (Jack): Figures.
GM: So 1 fate point and it uses up no awesomeness. Roll again, you want a 7 or less or a natural 20.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): I rolled an 8, but I use my Idealist power to temporarily add my faith to my awesomeness, that is +6 so I temporarily have an awesomeness of 13 and gain another fate.
Tom (Jack): And you have 5 left over for another roll right?
Julia (Brother Cadmus): No, the temporary bonus doesn't roll over. I am done rolling for more fate points tonight.
GM: So the 2d6, you are a warrior and a fool. A warrior needs a roll of 4 or less to improve their trademark item while a fool needs a 1 on the rightmost die. You are also in a state of grace for having 500 piety and so can gain or improve a relic if you roll doubles.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Double 2's!
Tom (Jack): Your luck is on fire tonight.
GM: So your trademark item increases by 1 benefit level and so does your relic.
Julia (Brother Cadmus): Good game, I'll see you all later.
Tom (Jack): Woah, forgetting something?
Julia (Brother Cadmus): What?
Kim (Thaugo): Helping clean up? He's our GM not our maid.

The GM, Julia, Kim, and Tom all turn to stare at the reader.
