Knights of the Rose
A civil war simmers without end in the fog shrouded Isles of Pretannia in the kingdom now known as Blackthorne.
It was renamed when the current King Blackthorne assumed control after the brief and chaotic reign of King Owen the suicidal. When Owen's mother learned his father had died in the crusades she committed the great sin of suicide via repeated self-defenestration which caused him so much grief that he smothered himself with his own pillow before he could even be coronated. It is a great tragedy that the pressures of the crown were too great for an eleven month old to bear.
Thankfully, it was King Blackthorne (Formerly Duke Blackthorne) who was able to restore order to the nation with his powerful Knightly Order, The Knights of the Black Rose. Bearing his crest they valiantly rode across the land suppressing any potential rebellion against his just rule, and dispensing summary judgements against any who would dare disturb the King's Peace. For this great service they were able to mandate voluntary donations of gratitude from their local communities.
King Blackthorne relocated his court to Grottenham Castle, surrounded on three sides by the sprawling Ryskwood. Here he is able to safely administer the entire kingdom and properly stockpile taxes for any future emergencies that peasants are unable to handle themselves, should any such arise once the great famine subsides.
Unfortunately, tales of rebellion spread like wildfire among many misguided peasants. They talk of a chivalric order of knights in gleaming plate who ride forth to establish "justice" and who stand against what they consider "tyranny" and "wanton, indefensible, cruelty towards the common man that serves no purpose but to sate the sadistic desires of the Knights of the Black Rose".
These are the fabled Knights of the Blue Rose, who are viewed by these peasants to represent all that is just and pure about Knighthood. They are the sworn enemies of the Knights of the Black Rose, yet there has never been a confirmed battle between any two such knights.
This is because the Knights of the Blue Rose don't actually exist, they are a hopeful fever dream of rebellious peasants. Every tale of them is third or fourth hand. Their greatest deeds always involve distant villages that don't actually exist. The Knights of the Black Rose have great martial strength, but it is quite impossible to simply stab a dreamer's ideal to death.
